The Co-vid sailboat

How do you turn $50,000 into $5,000?
Buy a boat, the old joke goes.

But Toronto Life finds four guys with a 50-year-old sailboat at Toronto Islands,
and Every Guy's Sweet Dream is renewed.

*  *  *

P.S. A study of U.S. boat owners shows they use their boats ... a total of 14 days a year.

A boat is a dream.
You sail it mostly in your head.
The best wind is between your ears.

LOST SONGS: The Telephone Song, Astrud Gilberto

Buzz buzz!

The was one of the earliest bossa novas to surface in North America.

Norman Gimble did the English lyric for the popular Roberto Menescal-Ronaldo BĂ´scoli Brazilian tune Stan Getz grabbed for an early album.

And launched Astrud Gilberto's career.

Veggie margarine

So I'm in a hurry and grab a tub of margarine at the grocery.

Later, I discover it's marked "Veggie" margarine.
As opposed to what?

Have I been spreading melting animals on my toast all these years?

Or is this just marketing?

Most margarines are made with vegetable oils, not animal fats, so most margarines are already veggie, sez the link below.
But how specific do you want to get?

Birdbath

The University of Surrey cyber-security expert is talking about his new satellite broadband service from space entrepreneur Elon Musk's Starlink company.

The outages, he thinks, may be caused by a lot of "pesky pigeons", which "have taken a fancy to sitting on the dish".

That small grey dish sits on the kitchen roof. To the curious pigeon, it might conceivably look like a modern bird bath rather short on water.

Tears are not enough

"I’ve never been one for politics and i’m not going to start now.

What I will say is that my beautiful, intelligent, beat-to-the-sound of his own drum, annoying, charming baby brother was killed yesterday helping to save lives.

he was a fucking medic.

 there to help people.

and now he is gone and my family will never be the same."

SLEEPER: Leo Sidran - Trying Times

"Yes indeed, these are trying times..."

Watercolors--SiriusXM's jazz-y channel 66--has been playing the hell out of this tune all week.

Leo Sidran recorded his bouncy ear-worm more than a year ago, during the height of co-vid madness.

But this week, a little up-lift goes a long way.

Yes, Leo is jazz vocalist Ben Sidran's kid.

Leo's a drummer. God loves drummers.

Baby lawsuit

I'm greatly inspired by the lawsuit a 30-year-old has just filed, demanding $2 million from Nirvana 'cause he was on the band's  Nevermind album cover.

He claims the cover sexually assaulted him.

If this works, imagine the lawsuits coming for circumcision.

TV for $1000 Alex?

Clue: Not the new Jeopardy host.

Answer: Who is Mike Richards.

Sony cancelled tapings of Jeopardy, and said the search is on--again--for a new host to replace Alex Trebek.

Richards' comments from seven years ago prompted viewer backlash and the production company pulled the plug on its announced pick.

Richards will remain in his off-camera job as exec producer. So crude comments about women and Jews are enough to lose a host job, but not management? Hmm. We shall see.

Full details of how the new host got spiked at...

LOST SONGS: Don't Box Me In, Stewart Copeland & Stan Ridgeway

"This is a movie you are likely to hate, unless you love it for its crazy, feverish charm..."

                                 --Roger Ebert

Don't Box Me In--the main theme from Rumblefish--has been knocking around in my head for decades.

It's the lyric about the goldfish.

In a jar. At the end of the bar.

The song clip above captures some of the flick's premium teen gang moments. Matt Dillon, Nic Cage, Dennis Hopper, Larry Fishburne and Mickey Rourke as "Motorcycle Boy."

Francis Ford Coppola. Say no more.

It was an angst film. It was an art film.

It seems to be nowhere on streaming services, tho it was on U.S. Netflix.

Copeland's percussive soundtrack, and his ear-worm song stalk the decades.

Every kid has been that goldfish.

Every old kid knows about the chilly moment bartender Tom Waits voices. "I've got 35 summers left. Just 35 summers."

What day did you start the count?

Many clips on YouTube. The fight scene is here...

And the goldfish lyric is below...

Rumblefish

You walk I'll run And follow right behind you

You call I'll come And I won't remember where I come from

Over there At the end of the bar This fish keeps swimming In a jar

I feel A tug on the line Which end Will I be on this time?

Don't box me in Don't box me in

One day I'll show them Just what I'm made of

There'll be A time When I won't remember what I was afraid of

And I'll be swimming In the sea

No banging on this glass For me

My eyes saw red When my world turned blue

So I'm leaving Everything that's true

And I'll jump into A brand new skin

And then you won't be able To box me in

Don't box me in Don't box me in Don't box me in Let go!

There's a few places 'round That I've never been

There's an ocean out there That I gotta swim

There's a river that flows Right past my door I wonder... I wonder... What?!

And if sometimes I can't seem to talk

You'll know this blackboard lacks A piece of chalk

Don't box me in I told you not to Don't box me in

Don't box me in Don't box me in Let go!

Fish joke
