VIDEO VAULT: Hong Kong Phooey

At the height of the 1970s martial arts craze, a Saturday morning cartoon introduced Hong Kong Phooey, "number one superguy" who's "quicker than the human eye."

Disguised as a mild-mannered police station janitor, Penrod Pooch transforms into a kung-fu-fighting pup who battles crime with his sidekick, a snickering cat.

Comic Scatman Crothers voiced the superhero.

The Hanna-Barbera produced show lasted only one season on ABC in 1974. The Chop Sockey riffs of the show seemed iffy even at the time, but it's fondly remembered by animation buffs.
