My Hunt for Portofino

I've been obsessed by Portofino for more than two years--found looking for Lost Songs.

A cool European flick with Cate Blanchett,  Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz, Emily Blunt and Zhou Xun? Shot on the Italian riviera?

With this moody opening title sequence?

I want to see this. But ...

The IMBD database lists no such picture.

It does not appear on any streamer.

Amazon doesn't sell it.

The Criterion Collection doesn't include it.

How can something this striking not exist?

One other problem: checking each actor's filmography, none has ever appeared with the others in a motion picture. What?

Yesterday, the penny dropped.

Instead of the stars or the title, I Google the credited "directors" of this mystery clip.

Peter Lindbergh and Stephen Kidd are international fashion photographers.

The "presenter"? IWC Schaffhausen? They're a famed Swiss maker of high-end watches.

Portofino is the name of a watch, not a picture. They sell for up to $22,000 US. No wonder I've never heard of IWC.

The images above are from a 2014 promotion the company commissioned from the fashion photographers and actors.

Only now do I twig to the watch in the video.

How dumb am I?

KateCat, a genius YouTuber, has taken a song she loves, and pasted it to edited images from a commercial. She's also messed with the speed.

Oh, how I wish there was a movie.

Interesting fact: Schaffhausen, in Switzerland, was bombed by the United States Army Air Force on April Fool's Day (!) 1944.

Till Bronner is trying to be the Chet Baker of this century. He should stick to playing his horns at which he is very fine, almost Guido Basso-good.

Here's a very fine Lost Song Singer, Johnny Janis. (On Playboy records, no less...)
