In the 1980s, Toronto's Variety Club hosted a monthly assembly of grown men in odd hats who'd drink and howl at Laurel & Hardy movies.
It was very silly.
Some wore a fez. Some wore a bowler.
I treasure my Sons of the Desert membership card. There are still more than 100 chapters.
Stan and Ollie made more than 100 films, from the 1920s to the 1950s. Were they the first to break the fourth wall: look directly into camera to share a slapstick joke with viewers?
