FRIDAY BAND FLASH: Stuff
For a kickass Friday, click this.
Stuff--the superstar band of the '70s--tears up Stevie Wonder's tune, birthing "the greatest instrumental based on a pop song, ever."
Richard Tee kills a piano. Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale cover guitars. Gordon Edwards on bass. Steve Gadd, the greatest drummer of his generation (sorry Mick Fleetwood) powers this gang of session all-stars.
And if you love it, below is a Tokyo bar band that tries Stuff's pace for Last Call.
Are we four beers in?
Drink up.
To funk.

Charlie Puth is wearing w-h-a-t?

Hard to believe it, but Charlie Puth is wearing over $4,000 worth of clothes in this photo.
Cover boy for GQ, the singer-songwriter sports:
T-shirt, $275, by R13.
Jeans, $1,650, by Balmain.
Boxer shorts, $54, by Hanro.
Sneakers, $850, by Balenciaga.
Belt, $250, by Collina Strada.
Silver wallet chain, $500, by Martine Ali.
Blue wallet chain, $300, by Collina Strada.
Watch, $150, by G-Shock.
Bracelet, $290, by Clock and Colours.
Balmain paneled skinny jeans and Balenciaga sneaks crack half the budget, to get that just- plain-folks, grease monkey look.

Marilyn Monroe
If you are tempted to watch the despicably dark, dreary Blonde on Netflix, watch these two clips from Marilyn Monroe's last picture in 1961.
The Misfits is an anti-western, the last gasps of cowboy culture on the vanishing frontier.
Monroe shines with Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift and Eli Wallach. John Huston directs, script by Marilyn's ex, Arthur Miller.
Misfits streams on Canadian Netflix, Pluto; rents on amazon for about four bucks.
Below, a hint of the sweet sadness of the flick, with Marilyn and Clark Gable.
Roadside Attractions: The Cheeto Puff

There's a new reason to drive to Cheadle, Alberta this week.
There's a 17 foot-high Cheeto, held aloft by three orange-tinged fingers, sitting in a field.
Apparently Cheeto's mascot, Chester Cheetah (WTF?) once said the orange dust from the salty snack is called Cheetles.
Cheadle? Close enuf.
Make it so.

Cheadle is a hamlet of less than 100 souls, about 30 km east of Calgary.

The Real Bros
"The euro used to be this stern, no nonsense Swiss businessman to the dollar's delinquent teen.
"But now, the euro is this lithe, flouncy little damsel, lollygagging about the cafe, ordering one glass of Sancerre, then idling for six hours.
"Then, the big, muscular dollar comes in, reeking of ball sweat, Axe body spray and gasoline, and orders the lobster to go."
--Steven Phillips-Horst, Gawker
If you fancy yourself a media know-it-all and admire smart takes on pop culture, you may have already discovered the once-a-month appeal of Talk Hole.
It's really the only reason to follow Gawker, the born-again bitchy web site that died in flames a decade ago over a Hulk Hogan sex tape.
Steven Phillips-Horst is the editor of the new Gawker. Eric Schwartau is a comedian: the duo's described as "alt-media darlings."
Their schtick was born during the pandemic in Interview magazine.
Each month for Gawker, they offer a transcribed riff: two gay bros yapping about pop culture and the end of the world.
Their current riff is here.
The epic Quiet Quitting riff last month is here.
Complete with chart.
"Talk Hole is read by an insular group of New York media people who read all the articles that just reference other articles," Steven snipes. "They know who Peter Thiel is. This is Gawker! The website he destroyed nine years ago when I was just 13."
The new Gawker is a pale ghost of the ass-kicking website that died. It's largely a wannabee diary of whines.
Except for ... Talk Hole.
It's inventive, bitchy, hilarious.
If you sort of want to see the dead-on-arrival new Bros movie, but don't really want to see the new Bros movie, you should first check out these guys.
Stick your toe in the water.
P.S. Buzz about the Gawker bros reminds me of back when weirdos first discovered Desus & Mero, the bodega guys who went from Vice to Showtime to kaput.

WUN'ERFUL, WUN'ERFUL! - Stan Freberg

Stan Freberg's classic riff on bandleader Lawrence Welk has new life.
A Youtube smartass has assembled Welk show clips to illustrate Stan Freberg's two-sided novelty 45 from 1957.

LOST SONGS: Chubby Clementine - Bobby Darin
"I'm no swimmer, but were she thinner
I mighta saved chunky Clementine ... "
In an era of dead-on-the-train-tracks teen love songs, Bobby Darin's passed without notice.
