Never sleep on your stomach

When I was in second grade,
we had a science book
with a very weird diagram.

It showed a side view
of how a fox can tunnel
his way underneath
a porcupine in winter snow,
and grab him from the bottom.

The underside of a porkie
is unprotected by quills.

Porcupines walk across the crust
of winter snows, forming paths
that seldom vary.

The diagram of the fox,
smiling as he tunnels
towards the unsuspecting
porkie path, haunts my dreams.

From that day to this,
I have slept on my side.

No kid wants a fox
tunneling up thru a mattress
to grab him by the gizzards.

That is why you should never
sleep on your stomach.
